The answer isn't as simple as saying one is better than the other.

We've travelled both ways, and we love them for completely different reasons.

Why Choose a Group Tour?
Group touring has changed enormously over the years.
Forget the old image of 50 people following someone holding an umbrella!
Today's touring options range from luxury small groups and specialist interest tours to large escorted journeys, adventure travel and fully hosted experiences.
One of the biggest advantages is simple:
Someone else has done the planning.
Your accommodation is organised. Your transport is arranged. Your itinerary is mapped out. Many of your sightseeing experiences are booked in advance.
You can simply arrive and enjoy the journey.
You Can See A Lot Without the Stress
This is particularly valuable when you're travelling somewhere unfamiliar.
Imagine trying to organise a journey through several countries in Europe, navigating Japan's transport system or driving through multiple American states.
It can absolutely be done independently – and for some people that's half the fun!
For others, they'd rather someone else worry about the logistics.
A good group tour allows you to experience a lot in a relatively short period without constantly thinking:
Where are we staying tonight? Where do we park? How long will it take to get there? Did I book the tickets?
Sometimes it's lovely to simply sit back and watch the scenery.
Your Tour Director Can Make a Huge Difference
A great Tour Director or local guide can transform your experience.
They don't just tell you what year a building was constructed.
They can introduce you to the stories, characters, history and culture of a destination.
They often know where to eat, what to order, where the locals go and those little places you'd probably drive straight past if you were travelling independently.
That local knowledge can add enormous value to your holiday.
And Then There Are the Friendships
This is one of our favourite things about group travel.
You start the holiday surrounded by strangers.
A few days later, you're sharing dinner, laughing about something that happened that morning and planning where you're going for a drink that night.
We've seen lifelong friendships begin on tours.
For solo travellers in particular, group touring can be a fantastic way to travel independently without necessarily travelling alone.
You have your own adventure while still having people around you to share it with.
But Group Touring Isn't for Everyone
There are trade-offs.
You'll generally have set departure times.
There may be early mornings.
You'll spend a certain amount of time at each attraction.
And occasionally you'll drive past somewhere and think:
"I really wish we could stop there!"
That's the nature of touring.
The itinerary has to keep moving.
Which brings us to another way we absolutely love travelling…

There is something special about an open road.
Your favourite playlist is on, you've got a coffee in the cup holder and today's plan is… well, whatever you want it to be.
That's the beauty of self-drive travel.
Freedom!
This is the biggest advantage.
See an interesting little town?
Stop.
Find an amazing roadside diner?
Pull over.
Love somewhere so much you want to spend another hour exploring?
Stay.
Nobody is waiting for you on the coach.
Self-drive travel gives you the freedom to experience a destination at your pace.
And sometimes the unexpected stops become the best memories of the whole holiday.
You Can Get Off the Tourist Trail
Self-driving can take you into places that larger tours don't always visit.
Small towns.
Local restaurants.
Scenic backroads.
National parks.
Country pubs.
Farmers' markets.
Roadside attractions that make absolutely no sense but somehow become the highlight of your trip!
This is one of the reasons we particularly love self-drive holidays through the USA.
Sometimes the journey between destinations is just as good as the destination itself.
Perfect for Independent Travellers
If you like deciding when you wake up, where you eat and how long you stay somewhere, self-drive travel may be perfect for you.
You can build the itinerary around your interests.
Love food? Build your journey around restaurants and local specialities.
Love nature? Spend extra time exploring national parks and scenic drives.
It's your holiday.
But There's More Planning Involved
Freedom comes with responsibility.
Someone needs to work out the route.
Someone needs to book the accommodation.
Someone needs to understand driving distances.
Someone needs to organise the rental car and insurance.
Someone needs to know whether parking is available at the hotel.
And someone needs to work out whether that innocent-looking three-hour drive on Google Maps is actually a six-hour sightseeing day once you start stopping!

You don't actually have to choose. For me personally I like a mix of both or a mix of planned and free time. Taking a tour to find the best bits or to utilise knowledgee then adding on to it.
Some of our favourite itineraries combine independent travel with organised touring.
Perhaps you spend a week self-driving through America's South before joining a hosted music tour in Nashville.
Explore Canada independently before joining an Alaskan cruise.
Spend a few days discovering Italy yourself before joining an escorted tour.
Or take a road trip before unpacking your bags and relaxing on a cruise.
This gives you the freedom and independence of travelling on your own plus the convenience and experiences of organised touring.
For many travellers, it's the perfect balance.
What About Hosted Group Travel?
There's also a difference between joining a standard group tour and travelling on a hosted group experience.
This is something we're particularly passionate about at Chris Watson Travel.
A hosted journey gives you many of the advantages of group touring while adding another level of personal service.
You're travelling with people who share similar interests, and your host is there to help throughout the journey.
